After: new blue Dutch lap vinyl siding and white trim on a Cape-style home with a full dormer in Garwood NJ
October 10, 2026

In November 2025 our crew replaced the roof and installed new siding on a 1½-story Cape-style home in Garwood, NJ. The roof came off and went back on in a single day on November 3, and the siding was finished on November 14. Here is what we found, what we did and why.

What we found

The house had three layers of shingles on it. Every layer adds weight and hides the condition of the wood underneath, and building code does not allow a new roof to go over two existing layers, so a full tear-off was the only right answer.

The siding was faded beige vinyl with mildew streaks on the shaded sides, and an old metal awning hung over the side door.

Roof day: down to the original boards

Once all three layers were off, we were down to the original plank boards on most of the roof, plus older plywood on the low-slope section. A lot of it was worn and stained, so we put down 20 sheets of new plywood to give the new roof a solid, flat base. The dormer was re-sheathed as well.

Then the synthetic underlayment went down, followed by the new shingles. The crew was still finishing the underlayment as the sun set, so the house was never left open overnight.

New siding, soffit and trim

Over the next ten days we re-sided the house in blue Dutch lap vinyl with white corners, white vented soffit and aluminum trim wrapped around the windows, and replaced the gable vents and dryer vents so everything seals properly against the new siding.
