You’ll see “Owens Corning Preferred Contractor” on a lot of roofing websites in NJ — including ours. But what does it actually mean for you as a homeowner? Here’s the straight answer.
What Is Owens Corning?
Owens Corning is one of the largest roofing shingle manufacturers in the United States. Their products — including the Duration, TruDefinition, and Berkshire collections — are among the most widely used on NJ homes. They also run a contractor certification program that tiers contractors based on experience, training, and track record.
What the Preferred Status Requires
To be an Owens Corning Preferred Contractor, a company has to:
- Be properly licensed and insured
- Have a verified track record of completed roofing projects
- Maintain a clean complaint history
- Use Owens Corning products and install them according to manufacturer specs
- Stay current with product training
It’s not just a badge you pay for. Owens Corning verifies the contractor’s standing.
What It Means for Your Warranty
This is the part that actually matters to you. When you hire an Owens Corning Preferred Contractor, you qualify for enhanced warranty coverage that you can’t get from a non-certified installer:
- Standard warranty: Owens Corning covers manufacturing defects in the shingles themselves
- Preferred installer warranty: Adds coverage for workmanship — meaning if the roof leaks due to installation error, you’re covered
- System warranty: When all components (shingles, underlayment, ventilation) are Owens Corning products installed by a Preferred Contractor, you can qualify for a full system warranty up to 50 years
What It Doesn’t Mean
Being Preferred certified doesn’t automatically mean a contractor does quality work on every job — just like a doctor having a medical license doesn’t guarantee a good bedside manner. You still need to check reviews, verify insurance, and get a written estimate. The certification is a baseline, not a guarantee.
