White aluminum gutter and downspout corner on a Herts job
October 1, 2026

If you live under oaks, maples or pines in New Jersey, you already know the routine: ladder out in the fall, ladder out again in the spring, and somewhere in between a summer downpour sends water over the gutters because of a clump of seeds you missed. Gutter guards promise to end all of that. Do they?

The honest answer is that good gutter guards make a big difference for most homes with trees, but no guard is truly “never clean again.” Here is what to know before you buy.

What gutter guards actually do

Guards cover the top of the gutter so leaves, twigs and most debris roll off while water still gets in. They cut down how often you need to clean and keep downspouts from clogging, which is where most overflow problems start.

The main types

TypeHow it worksGood to know
Micro-meshFine stainless mesh over a frameBlocks small debris like pine needles and seeds. Our usual recommendation for tree-heavy lots
ScreensLarger-hole metal or plastic screenInexpensive, stops big leaves, lets small debris through
Reverse curve / hoodWater follows a curved lip into the gutterSheds leaves well, can overshoot in very heavy rain
Foam and brush insertsSit inside the gutterEasy DIY, but trap debris and break down over time

When gutter guards are worth it

  • You have trees over or near the roof, especially pines.
  • Your gutters overflow in heavy rain even though you clean them.
  • You have a two- or three-story house and climbing a ladder is risky.
  • You have had ice dams or water in the basement from overflowing gutters.

When they may not be worth it

  • No trees nearby and your gutters stay mostly clean.
  • Your gutters are old, sagging or leaking. Putting new guards on failing gutters is wasted money. Fix or replace the gutters first.

Gutter guards still need some care

Even the best micro-mesh can collect a film of pollen, roof granules and fine debris on top. Most homes need a quick check once a year and a rinse or brush-off of the guard surface. That is a lot easier than scooping out a gutter full of wet leaves.

Get the gutters right first

Guards only work on gutters that are sized, sloped and hung properly. Seamless gutters with enough downspouts for your roof size matter more than any guard. If your gutters are pulling away from the fascia or leak at the joints, read the value of professional gutter replacement, and remember that overflow can also cause leaks that look like roof leaks.

Frequently asked questions

Do gutter guards cause ice dams?

Ice dams are caused mainly by heat escaping into the attic, not by guards. Good attic insulation and ventilation are the real fix. See how much attic insulation you need in NJ.

Can gutter guards be added to existing gutters?

Yes, if the gutters are in good shape and properly pitched.

How often should gutters be cleaned without guards?

At least twice a year in New Jersey, spring and fall, and more often under heavy tree cover.
